- Sun Runner and I had a lunch date yesterday at Whole Foods & REI. The food was fantastical and REI left me rather unimpressed. I guess I was expecting more runner porn. *shrugs*
- I'm glad ya'll enjoyed the Leg Gremlins yesterday, but for real, this is how I feel. I'm kinda at my wits end with all the random lower leg issues I'm having. My shooting pains and crippling aches have been traveling around my legs with no rhyme or reason and there's only so much I can handle before I need to seriously re-assess my goals for the training cycle. I don't have insurance, nor will I anytime soon, so the last thing I need, is to end up with a serious injury. Races are but short term goals, Running is a way of life. There will always be another marathon to run, another chance to attempt a BQ, but I won't always have the opportunity to do so if I don't take care of that which enable me to make it to the Finish Line in the first place.
- That being said I want to recap Monday's run: The Hill Workout Replacement. Coach had me run a pace workout instead of: 2 M W/U, 30 min @ RP and a 1 M C/D. After having not run in almost 5 days I was anxious to say the least... The morning was cool and clear, I cautiously headed out acutely aware of every foot fall and muscle strain. I took the first 2 miles easy with an exact pace of 9:32 and as the second mile beeped I ramped up to race pace... or rather just under... and kept it there, effortlessly for almost 4 miles before it was time to cool down. Every joyous step taken was pain free, euphoric bliss. I hadn't had a run like that since Gasparilla training cycle. It left a smile on my face and felt like the heavens were shining down from above!
...and then 4 hours later the pimp limp was back with such a venegance I wished I had rememebered my gold plated, diamond studded cane. Bling, Bling, B*tches!
This was when I realized I had Leg Gremlins, because the unyielding pain of death shooting up from my right ankle was a new pain, not the calf issues of last week... or the shin pain before that... or the Lankle pain that started this all...
D@mn Leg Gremlins.
16 Miles on deck for Saturday... maybe.

Amputate!
See, I would be horrible in the medical field.
Hmmm. Well apparently I will be the ho to your pimp as Old Wonky is back (sort of) for me. I'll be heading to a podiatrist to get actual medical help instead of googling and self diagnosis. I hope you feel better soon and remember...pimpin' aint easy.
B.o.B is right...pimpin' AINT easy.
I like REI, but it's not a running store so much as a camping/outdoor store.
Check REI and see if they sell new lower legs; might be just what you need. :)
No, seriously, this legthing really sucks! Stupid lower legs! Frustrating at least! Might be an idea to check with a specialised MD. Just to make sure that nothing terrible is going on.
Hey, I'm not a Dr, but I did stay at a holiday... wait, no, seriously - I just finished anatomy & physiology II for nursing students on Monday, and what you're describing is a common description for nerve pain. "Drifting pain in the leg that is acute in nature". Maybe not, since I only had one line to go on, but seriously, consider going and getting your back & hips adjusted if you don't have insurance to do "what really should be done". (my sports med Dr always seems to be a fan of the MRI, which is ONLY about $3000 or so). It's not going to hurt you to get your back popped, and it might help. My chiro would do it for about $50
Be smart Chica! There will be other races. Not that I am saying give up, because I'm not, I'm just saying be smart about how you torture your legs.
Next week we shall visit a place chock full of real runner porn, as we discussed. :)
And keep me posted about Saturday.
Ugh, how frustrating this must be!!! What the F is going on?! Hope you can be rid of those gremlins for good and SOON!
Good luck for Saturday.
REI is much better for cyclist porn. :)
SAD PANDAS about your legs! What the H is going on over there? Maybe you need the ice cream and beer diet (see: my life).
Ugh sorry leg issues are still plaguing you! I totally agree REI is lackluster at best in terms of running stuff. Love WF though!
REI really isn't a running store, at least I wouldn't deem it as such. I like it for other things, and there great member program which I think I mentioned before but I dont think I ever bought anything running related there.
I hope your leggies feel better. It's got to be so frustrating to not be able to get your runs in!!!
Leg Gremlins are evil!! I have been feeling that way too so I hear you! I hope all the pains go away!! I got new compression socks so I am hoping that will help..have you used those?? Good luck on the 16 :) Oh and I love whole foods!!
Every summer I go home to the USA so excited for stores like REI and then I'm disappointed. never fails! / I'm really sorry about your leg issues and I know it must be really hard, but I'm impressed that you're keeping perspective. Running is for life and if you keep running for the rest of your life that's a gift!
You are so right about sacrificing the short-term goal for ong-term well-being. So often we lose perspective...
Hmmm...this is odd! Are you ablet to afford to see a chiro? They don't usually require insurance and are usually a TON cheaper. The fact that it is a traveling pain is really weird. Don't count out any races yet, you have pelnty of time to diagnose, treat and move on back to training! Big hugs to you Red!
I hear you on REI. It's more of an outdoor store. The husband drags me there with the bribery of Luna Moons and such, but then I have to hang out for an hour while he looks at camping stuff. Nooooo.
So sorry about the leg gremlins, that totally sucks. Take it easy girl. I know you'll get to Boston, but, like you said, you'll never get there if you get seriously injured. I'll be cheering you on down Boylston whenever you BQ. This time, next time, whenever. I.am.there!
PS. I did a hill workout this morning and thought of you. You would have been laughing. I was a sight!
I don't have any medical advice, except caution is always better. Listen to your body. Life is long and many races are in front of you, so don't push it now.
REI is very "meh" for me on runners stuff. It does make me want to go camping -- even though I have never been camping in my whole life.
I hope the gremlins go away soon!
i've been frustratingly searching the web for the last couple weeks, trying to determine what the hell is wrong with my gimpy right leg... now I finally have the answer: LEG GREMLINS!!!!
I wish I could find a better way to kill those little bastards.
I really really hope your leg feels better. I hate to hear about your pain. Take it easy - you are so right that running is a way of life and we don't want you hurt!
How frustrating! You're being smart focusing on long term.
so sorry about the leg pain. i keep getting phantom pains because i'm so paranoid about the achilles coming back. be careful out there and follow your own advice. there will always be races, don't hurt yourself permanently.
You are right - REI and running...not so much. I hate leg gremlins too. Hope they leave you alone soon!
how frustrating this must be. good luck on Saturday, if you can do it. There will always be another race...maybe your leg gremlins are helping point out you might need an extended rest..which is obviously not what any of us want to hear. take care of yourself and your legs!
You make a very good point: races are short term goals and running is a way of life.
There will always be time to BQ and PR races. Take care of yourself, Miss Morgan! I hope the leg gremlins go back to where they came from soon.
I love thing #2. It's something we all need to remember. Sometimes we get so focused on the goal we're working toward, it's hard to step back and consider how our actions will affect our overall or long-term health. You're doing the right thing by listening to your body.
Sorry about your leg pains! I know how that can be...BLAH! It looks like you had a good Monday run though.
I just found your blog and I love it! It's so entertaining and funny :)
Wishing your legs get better soon.
Oh man do I know ALL about the pimp limp. I feel way more like an old lady than a pimp when my shins are crippling me though. I hope you can reassess and get rid of those gremlins!
Hope you can find a way to see a Doctor if needed.. Hmmm maybe if you dont feed the Grmlins after dark they wont come out...or something like that.
Hang in there chick!
"Races are but short term goals, Running is a way of life. " <- if that's not a "real" quote, it definitely should be. Since I'm going backwards, I know that your run on Saturday went well, though maybe not the 16 miles that were planned? Either way, slow comeback is better than none at all :)
If I had a dollar for every time I was disappointed at the lack of shoe porn...or any other kind...I wouldn't have to work! *zing*
